uPVC or aluminium windows: how do you choose?
A practical comparison of PVC and aluminium for homes, renovations and large glazing: comfort, size, design, maintenance and budget.
In brief
PVC is usually the efficient, balanced solution for standard residential windows. Aluminium becomes relevant when a project needs large elements, slimmer sightlines, rigidity or a precise architectural expression. Both materials can be right in the same home.
- Select the material for each opening type rather than applying one material by default to the entire building.
- Compare the complete window: frame, reinforcement, glazing, hardware and installation.
- For large openings, engineering checks and system limits matter more than aesthetic preference.
- Ask for equivalent specifications; a profile name alone does not support a fair comparison.
What to compare for the same requirement
| Criterion | uPVC | Aluminium |
|---|---|---|
| Geometry | Proposed sizes, divisions and reinforcement | Proposed sizes, system and engineering check |
| Appearance | Finish and visible frame width | Finish and visible frame width |
| Glazing | Glass build-up and weight | Glass build-up and weight |
| Opening | Mechanism, hardware and active sash | Mechanism, hardware and active sash |
| Maintenance | Finish and hardware care guidance | Finish and hardware care guidance |
| Quotation | Complete window, installation and included services | Complete window, installation and included services |
When PVC is the natural choice
PVC combines thermal performance, cost control, finish choice and low maintenance. A correctly sized PVC specification can cover tilt-and-turn windows, balcony doors and common openings in houses and apartments very effectively.
The number of profile chambers is not a complete decision criterion. Reinforcement, sash size, glazing, spacer, hardware and installation sealing work as one assembly.
- Homes and apartments with standard openings
- Renovations with a controlled investment
- Demanding thermal-comfort goals
- White, solid or wood-look finishes
When aluminium earns its place
Aluminium supports rigid geometries and slimmer sightlines, making it suitable for doors, large fixed glazing and sliding systems. Modern thermally broken systems can perform well, but the exact series and glazing must follow the project target.
Aluminium does not remove the need for engineering. Glass weight, wind pressure, drainage and transport may determine the final configuration.
- Large openings and sashes
- Precise architectural lines
- Façades with extensive glazing
- RAL colours, textures and specialist finishes
A mixed specification may be stronger
You can choose uPVC for some windows and aluminium for other parts of the same home. For terrace access, we compare sliding mechanisms and the available frame materials separately. Investment is then concentrated where the technical and visual advantage is meaningful.
For a useful comparison, keep glazing build-up, hardware level and installation approach close to equivalent. Otherwise you are comparing packages, not materials.
- Define sizes and opening types first
- Record orientation and solar exposure
- Set noise and security requirements
- Compare total installed cost
What a technical quotation should include
The quotation should identify system, finish, reinforcement or construction, glazing, hardware, opening types, accessories, transport and installation. A value published for a frame profile should not be presented as the value of the complete window.
Panorama Ferestre can prepare a first specification from plans, a window schedule, photographs and approximate sizes, followed by final site measurement.

Does aluminium insulate less than PVC?+
Material alone cannot answer this. Aluminium series, thermal break, glazing and element size determine complete-window performance.
Can I combine PVC and aluminium?+
Yes. It is often rational when large openings have different requirements from regular windows.
Which one lasts longer?+
Service life depends on system quality, fabrication, exposure, installation and maintenance. Both can be durable when correctly specified.
