Smart Slide and lift-and-slide: what are the differences?

Smart Slide and lift-and-slide use different operating mechanisms. Compare operation, clear opening, threshold, permitted dimensions and the configuration offered for your project. Frame material is a separate choice.

In brief

There is no universally superior system. The right choice follows the required clear opening, geometry, threshold, glazing weight, installation detail and the configuration that can be confirmed for the project.

Key decisions
  • Set the opening scheme and active sash before selecting the system.
  • A low threshold must coordinate with waterproofing, drainage and floor levels.
  • Glass weight affects operation and hardware.
  • Plan solar protection early for large south- or west-facing openings.

Smart Slide: compact and efficient

Smart Slide moves the sash and presses it against the seals when closing. It suits projects that need sliding operation, effective sealing and a more compact construction than lift-and-slide.

It is not the same as an old basic slider or an HST system. Permitted dimensions, divisions and threshold type follow the selected system documentation.

  • Sash scheme and clear opening
  • Operating method
  • Documented system limits
  • Threshold and project integration

Lift-and-slide: large openings, controlled movement

Turning the handle lifts the sash slightly from its seals and allows it to roll along the track. The mechanism is intended for large, heavy elements and can support reduced thresholds in compatible configurations.

Support, levels, water management and glass transport must be planned before installation.

  • Sash scheme and clear opening
  • Element weight
  • Threshold and floor junction
  • Technically confirmed configuration

The threshold is a construction detail

The phrase ‘zero threshold’ can hide important differences. Even when the visible transition is low, the system needs support, waterproofing, drainage and junctions with interior and exterior floor build-ups.

In new construction, the slider datum belongs in the design before screeds and insulation. Renovation options are constrained by existing structure and levels.

  • Verify finished levels before ordering
  • Coordinate terrace falls
  • Keep drainage serviceable
  • Allow for compatible shading and screens

How to decide

Send opening width and height, intended scheme, terrace position, orientation and photographs of the lower junction. Panorama Ferestre can compare feasible options and flag assumptions for site measurement.

FAQ

Questions that come up before quotation

Which system seals better?+

It depends on the exact series, configuration, size and installation. Both can seal effectively when used in the right application.

Can the threshold be completely flush?+

Some systems provide a visually reduced transition, but full integration depends on floor structure, waterproofing and drainage.

Is an HST difficult to operate?+

Hardware is designed for heavy sashes, but weight, adjustment and maintenance affect the real operating force.
